We have just been commissioned to design the gardens for a new build eco-house located in a beautiful secluded site on Bodmin Moor.

PRIVATE HOUSE OUTSIDE OF BATH
We were asked by Studio KAR to work with on landscape proposals for this private house.
Our concept was to create a series of journeys and spaces by introducing a sculptural structure that would wind its way through the garden. This structure, or series of structures could be a wall which retains land when it has to, become a pattern in the ground when it does not and gives enclosure when desired. It could be made out of stone, timber and or earth.

We were asked by Studio KAH to work with them on proposals to regenerate the Vassal Centre in Bristol.

GARDENS FOR A NEW SPA HOTEL IN NORTH DEVON
We are designing a series of gardens for a new spa hotel with 1.7 hectares of grounds. We are at stage D so can’t give much away, but it is all very exciting and our first project working with the Nash Partnership.

The major earth works have started. This will link the homestead part of the farm back into the adjacent landscape by creating flowing naturalistic landforms with dry stone retaining walls helping define certain areas. The final planting for Bailiffs cottage is complete, photos to come.

STOKES CROFT GATEWAY ENHANCEMENT, BRISTOL
Dallas Pierce Quintero asked us to help with their ‘Ghost House’ submission. The proposals where for a lightweight steel structure which represented the 1st and 2nd floor of the former pharmacy building, 3 types of climbing plants would be grown around this bringing seasonality and scent to the street.
The ground floor would be developed with the community, but could contain a ‘notice cabinet’ along the back wall.
We presented our ideas to the local community last week.

KLEINGARTEN OR SCHREBER GARTEN
The German equivalent of our allotment but they are different. They were Dr Schreber’s reaction to the effects of the early industrialisation of German cities and how it divorced people from the nature. My wife’s great grandfather (August Wessendorf) wrote a book on Kleingartens and founded one in Gladbeck (or a Google translation).

We are working with Architecture00 to create sustainable and evolving green façades for their proposed community building. We are also creating a tough and robust ‘boulder landscape’ associated with the new community centre, inspired by the regional landscape.

STARTING CONCEPT DESIGN WORK FOR A PRIVATE HOUSE IN CHESHIRE
We have just been appointed to carry out the concept design and stage E detail design for a private house in Cheshire.
It is lovely garden with a number mature oak and beech trees. The eastern side has a wilder, more natural feel and a small stream runs along the whole of the southern boundary.

JOHN ATTENDED A DESIGN CHARRETTE WITH ARCHITECTURE 00 AT NOTRE DAME SCHOOL IN SOUTHWARK.
At this intense design session, we looked at producing solutions for the school’s inadequate dining room facilities and how to improve the intense atmosphere of the school by exploiting under-used and under-valued outdoor spaces.

We are working in collaboration with Mitchell Taylor Workshop on this invited competition to find a temporary and affordable use for recession hit construction sites.
The proposals are for an all year city produce garden, which will also be an engaging and educational public space.

We have been setting out positions for tree planting around the cottage later this winter and will be plating an ‘Autumn Wood’ early in the new year. Hundreds of bulbs have also been planted.

SHORT LISTED FOR THE NEW SOIL ASSOCIATION HQ IN BRISTOL (4 no. presentation extracts)
We were part of a team lead by Designscape Architects along with Bill Gething, Momentum Engineering and Ernest Griffiths, for a competition to design the new Soil Association headquarters in Bristol.
Our thoughts focused around how a building could interact with a variety of public and private spaces and how the whole site could be a positive and educational place to work while showcasing the Soil Association to the public. Very disappointed we did not to win.
